“Once in a while it really hits people that they don’t have to experience the world in the way they have been told to.” -Alan Keightley
Our round-the-world trip is an extended honeymoon, but also a break from real world “obligations” to pursue our passions of traveling, learning about the world and experiencing new things – while we’re still young, energetic, adventurous and healthy enough to do it. We don’t want to wait until retirement to feel like we’re putting our hard-earned money toward something we’ve always wanted to do. And right now is the perfect time. We have no anchors in our life — children, a car, a house — that make this trip more difficult to pursue.
Though, it’s important to note that this journey doesn’t come without a price, without sacrifice. We weren’t just handed the funds to travel — we saved, minimized and prioritized. We’re putting on hold our dreams of raising a pug (Mr. Chubbs), buying property and hosting dinner parties (just kidding about that last one). And we are leaving the 9-to-5 world — 401k benefits, employer-sponsored health insurance, paid leave. We’ve been saving and saving and saving for a dream. This is our dream. Sometimes you have to bend the rules and live against the grain to make a dream come true.
Why be alive if you don’t pursue the things you’re passionate about?
